Uses
Tretinoin (also known as Retin-A) is a by-product of vitamin A.
It causes
the body to shed outer
skin cells and promotes the formation of collagen. It can be
used in the treatment of acne and also has anti-aging
effects on the skin. The top layer of skin thickens and
produces a more youthful appearance. Tretinoin is used to improve the
appearance and texture of the skin,
reducing wrinkles and the signs of aging. Tretinoin has effects on the
both the surface (epidermis) and the deep (dermis) parts of the skin.
By increasing the speed surface cells are replaced, a major benefit is
to decrease the effects of aging caused by sunlight.
Dosage and Administration
Tretinoin (Retin-A) cream should be applied once a day, before
retiring, using
enough to cover the entire affected area lightly. A thin layer is
adequate. Using this cream more frequently or in excessive amounts does
not improve the results - once a day is enough. Avoid applying near the
eyes, mouth, or open cuts since all creams can irritate sensitive skin
in those areas. Positive results should be noticed after two to three
weeks, but more than 6 weeks of continual usage may be required before
definite beneficial effects are seen. Once skin improves, it may be
possible to maintain the improvement with less frequent applications.
Contraindications
This product typically can be used with all other skin care products
and makeup. However, if over-sensitivity or irritation occurs, please
discontinue.
Warnings and Precautions
Tretinoin cream is indicated for topical use only. Exposure
to
sunlight, including sunlamps, should be minimised during the use of
tretinoin cream. The tretinoin will help your skin rejuvenate and
therefore may lead to a heightened susceptibility to sunlight as a
result. If used excessively, no more rapid or better results will be
obtained and marked redness, peeling or discomfort may occur.
